The Engine Room’s Futures Podcast

The Futures Podcast is a special series created as part of The Engine Room’s 15-year anniversary. The focus is on the futures we are (re)imagining as a team. It is a space to capture and share the voices, reflections and ideas of people across the team.

We think about futures in a variety of ways. They can be what’s way out ahead that lets our imaginations run wild or something more proximate and pragmatic. It can also be thinking about the ecosystems within which we move, the ideas and dreams of communities or tangible areas of work closer to “home.”

Join us each month for a new episode of our Futures podcast. And if you discover the series later on, feel free to listen in any order you choose!

Who owns the sky?

The Engine Room

In this episode of the Futures Podcast, Paola and Narrira invite us to look up at the sky and consider what it can teach us about technology, power, and the futures we are building together. Starting with personal stories of navigating by the stars, the conversation explores how our relationship with the sky has changed in an age of satellites, GPS, and global internet infrastructure. Along the way, they discuss digital sovereignty, satellite technologies, connectivity in remote communities, and the growing influence of private companies in shaping how people access and experience the digital world. Drawing on Indigenous knowledge systems, community perspectives, and alternative ways of understanding the sky, Paola and Narrira reflect on what it means to imagine technologies that are rooted in care, autonomy, and collective stewardship. Join us for a thoughtful conversation about navigation, community, and how we might chart different technological futures.
