Meet us (virtually) at RightsCon 2020

Laura Guzman

Though it will look quite different this year, we are still very much looking forward to exchanging knowledge, experiences and solidarity at RightsCon this year. We’re keen to talk about justice, responsible data, ethical decision-making, advocacy, the potentials (and pitfalls) of new technologies and even more that we might not even know about yet!

Take a look at our sessions below, RSVP if you’re interested (make sure to register by 21 July!), and reach out to us to connect via the RightsCon platform. We can’t wait to see you all – albeit virtually this go around!

27 July, 13:45-14:45 UTC-4 (ET, New York)
Taking action on digital ID: advocacy tactics for civil society

Wondering how to address pending or existing digital ID systems in your part of the world? We’ll talk about effective advocacy tactics that address community needs based on lived experience. Then you’ll get the chance to work through scenarios to see how these tactics can be applied in a variety of contexts. For some background reading, check out our findings from a multi-country study on digital ID. Email sbaker@theeingineroom.org if you have questions about this session.

28 July, 9:15-10:15 UTC-4 (ET, New York)
Rebalancing the scales: addressing and mitigating power asymmetries in funding of the tech/human rights ecosystem

Power asymmetries, scarcity of funds, extractive practices. In this session, we will share some insights of our research on the barriers and challenges organisations in the tech and human rights space face when trying to access funding. Speakers will also discuss possible strategies and best practices seen that can foster a more equitable space. Email teresa@theengineroom.org if you have questions about this session.

29 July, 11:15-12:15 UTC-4 (ET, New York)
Using data ethically in humanitarian, human rights, and OSINT work

Join us to strategise around the best ways to foster–and actually implement–ethical decision making when using data in human rights, humanitarian and OSINT work. We’ll hear from speakers who’ve made their own recommendations (and tough choices) with data in tricky contexts and then turn to small groups to brainstorm around common barriers and potential approaches. For more context, you can read about knowing when to say, “no,”  feminist practices in open source intelligence or decision-making with geospatial data. Email laura@theengineroom.org if you have questions about this session.

30 July, 14:30-15:30 UTC-4 (ET, New York)
Responsible data: reducing potential for harm during the design phase

Join us to explore ways to be more responsible with the data of historically marginalized groups and individuals. In this strategy session, we’ll draw out common risks and challenges that non-profit organizations and designers face in the Latin American context. This will be a participatory session held in Spanish and English. Email cathy@theengineroom.org if you have questions about this session.
