2017 in Review: This work matters now more than ever

Laura Guzman

At The Engine Room, we value learning. Learning necessitates reflection, which comes easy at times like the end of a project, launch of a program, or advent of a new year. With that in mind, we’re excited to announce the launch of our 2017 Retrospective, where we dive into not just our work, but that of our brilliant partners around the world. We explore not only what we did together, but what we learned along the way. Last year was a challenging one for defenders of human rights, advocates for transparency, fighters against corruption, and this work matters more than ever. With all of this, we want to thank our network of supporters, funders and partners for making this work possible.

What’s Inside & How it’s made

In the Retrospective, you can learn more about what we do, check out our Executive Director’s take on the year and see what our services actually look like in practice for partners. Take a look at what 2017 taught us, and see how we are dedicated to building a healthy internal culture. Get a feel for things like who are partners and funders are, and how many plants we have decorating the many desks we use around the world.

It’s no secret that gathering information covering every aspect of an organisation’s work – from HR policies to light-touch support engagements – isn’t quick! It’s a challenge faced by organisations big and small, and we think it’s an important one to tackle. This year, we used an internal system of 30-day reports, wherein each team member reported on the happenings of their past month. This kind of regular reflection and reporting proved to be a boon for taking a high-level look at what we’d “done” over the course of longer stretches of time. We combined these reports, consultations with team members to clarify specifics, and check-ins with partners to confirm we had their consent to share stories of our work together, and voila!
