We’re excited to welcome Instituto Lamparina to our Matchbox Program this year. Based in Brazil, Lamparina is building narrative power to strengthen democracy through a gender, racial, and climate justice lens, and we’re thrilled to collaborate with them over the coming months.
Who they are
Instituto Lamparina is a women-led organization that believes in the transformative power of narrative. Their work is grounded in a simple but powerful idea: how we talk about critical issues shapes the possibilities for social change.
Lamparina produces change through three core strategies:
- Weaving narrative ecosystems: Shifting public discourse by connecting diverse voices and perspectives across civil society.
- Conducting narrative research: Grounding their work in evidence to understand what stories resonate and why.
- Carrying out collective campaigns: Using strategic communication and artivism to mobilize communities and shift narratives.
Their work includes a significant focus on reproductive justice narratives in Brazil. They maintain extensive networks of contacts working in this space and conduct critical research on the actors and narratives shaping reproductive rights discourse across the country.
What we’ll be working on together
As Lamparina scales their work documenting anti-rights actors in Brazil and mobilizing civil society while managing sensitive data, they’ve identified urgent needs around digital security and data protection.
In addition, the Instituto Lamparina team is interested in working with The Engine Room to explore and develop AI usage policies that are safer, more informed, and aligned with their community-focused approach to research implementation.
Our joint efforts will involve:
- Organizational assessment: Conducting a comprehensive review of Lamparina’s current digital security practices, data management infrastructure, and tool usage to identify vulnerabilities and establish a baseline for improvements.
- Co-designing and implementing priority security measures, including digital security protocols and responsible AI usage policies.
- Developing resources and guides in Brazilian Portuguese for Instituti Lamparina’s team to use and refer to.
The partnership will take a flexible, iterative approach as we learn together and ensure that all solutions are accessible and sustainable for Lamparina’s team. If you want to know more about Instituto Lamparina’s work please check their website.
