2018 as we wrote it

Laura Guzman

At The Engine Room, 2018 was our most prolific blogging year yet, with over 60 posts. As the year draws to a close, we feel gratitude towards all of our external contributors and our dear readers. Take a quick look at some of our – and our readers’ – favorite posts below.

Reflecting and strategising
Throughout the year, we reflected quite a bit on our processes and programs, seeing to both measure what we’re already doing and improve what we can do in the future. Learn about how we did this with our Light-Touch Support (LiTS) and our reflections on how we create impact. We also spent a lot of time thinking about how to create healthy organisations from many perspectives, from wellbeing to security.

Creating, shaping and launching
This year, we were eager to share news from Japiqay (ES), one of our Matchbox partners, when they launched a new platform for monitoring corruption at the beginning of the year. We also launched our research on organisational security, Ties That Bind, and a review of biometric technologies in humanitarian efforts. Read about how you can use data to spark investigation (ES) of influential individuals, or brush up on your responsible data talking points.

Embracing change
Some of our most popular posts were announcements about new programs, events or open roles. Two bookended one of the largest transitions we’ve made as an organisation, gaining a new Executive Director. Read about Julia’s exciting transition, and catch up on Alix’s reflections on why it was time for her to go.

Building and learning
We love learning at The Engine Room and we think it’s important to reflect upon and share what we learn. Some of our favorite learnings this year were about local solutions for public service delivery, the careful balance of transparency and data protection, and the importance of re-use and sharing!

We hope this will cover your reading needs until we’re back in the new year. See you in 2019!
